Automata Art & Science

Art
STE(A)M
Engineering
In this activity students will use skills learned from the sicence unit of simple machines to create movable puppets andconcepts from the drama curriculum to act out a play using their new creations!

Concepts at a Glance

●Understand simple machines & automata art

● Use the stages of the Applied design andknowledge of simple machines to create their own automata art.

● Apply concepts from the drama curriculum to use their new creations

Curriculum Connections

Science

Grade 1:

● Explore how the different properties of materialsconnects to the function

○ of the material and matter

○ The properties of materials allows us to usethem in a variety of different ways

Grade 2:

○ Forces and different materials can influencethe movement of an object

○ Exploring how objects move through andover different materials

○ The motion of an object can be caused bydifferent types and strengths of forces

Grade 5:

○properties of simple machines: levers, wedge, inclined plane, wheel and axle, pulley, and screwand their force effects

Art

● A variety of dramatic forms

○ A medium for the expression of dramaticmeaning (e.g., improvisation, tableau,role-play, mime, readers theater, storytheater); may involve the integration of avariety of media and a combination of thearts.

Materials

● Cardboard

● Paper

● Drawing utensils

● Pins

● String

● Skewers

● Glue

● Scissors

Activity Instructions

Part 1:

● Allow students some time to research someother simple automatons to determine howthey want to make their own.

● Students will plan out how they want tobuild their automaton using the worksheet.

● Once students have a plan, they will workto build their own. As they build, they willneed to problem solve and redesign tomake their design work.

● Allow reflection on their process. This canbe done in a science journal!

Part 2:

● Put students in groups

● Have them create a short puppet show skit using their designs!
